भरतेन भरतमुनिना वा प्रणीतं नाट्यशास्त्रं नाट्यं रङ्गमञ्चं वाऽऽश्रित्य प्रणीतं सुविशदं प्राचीनतमं शास्त्रम्। शास्त्रमिदं ख्रिष्टपूर्वं द्वितीयशतके सङ्कलितमिति ऐतिह्यविदो मनीषिणो निर्धारयन्ति । इदं खलु कलाविषयको विश्वकोशात्मको ग्रन्थ इत्यत्र नाऽस्ति संशीतिलेशः । ग्रन्थेऽस्मिन् सङ्गीतशास्त्रं सौन्दर्यशास्त्रं शिल्पशास्त्रं वास्तुशास्त्रं साहित्यशास्त्रं तथा चाऽन्यानि नैकानि शास्त्राण्युपविषयत्वेन सन्ति निबद्धानि । सप्तत्रिंशदध्यायेषु विभक्तेऽस्मिन् ग्रन्थे ६००० श्लोकाः सन्ति । नाट्यशास्त्रस्य प्रकाशनम् ऊनविंशशतके सौन्दर्यशास्त्रस्य रङ्गमञ्चस्य कलाय़ा इतिहासे काचिदपूर्वा घटना। विविधपाण्डुलिपीनां साहाय्येन पाठसंशोधनं विधाय नाट्यशास्त्रमिदं प्रकाशितमभूत् ।

भरत अथवा भरतमुति के द्वारा विरचित नाट्यशास्त्र नाट्य (नाटक एवं रंगमंच) पर सबसे विस्तृत एवं प्राचीन ग्रन्थ है। दूसरी शताब्दी ई0 पू0 संकलित नाट्यशास्त्र वास्तव में विश्वकोषीय प्रवृत्ति की एक कला है। नाट्यशास्त्र विभिन्न अनुशासित विषयों और उपविषयों जैसेः संगीतशास्त्र, सौन्दर्यशास्त्र, शिल्पशास्त्र, वास्तुशास्त्र, साहित्यशास्त्र जैसे विषयों की एक विशद श्रृंख्ला से भी संबंधित है तथा 37 अध्यायों में लगभग 6000 श्लोकों में पद्यरुप में निर्मित है। नाट्यशास्त्र की खोज उन्नीसवीं सदी में प्राप्त पाण्डुलिपियों और पाठ के बाद प्रकाशन के दौरान सौन्दर्यशास्त्र और रंगमंच के इतिहास की महत्वपूर्ण घटनाओं में से एक रही है।
